THERMAL BEHAVIOUR OF THIN METAL LINES UNDER DC FIELD WITH VARIABLE MATERIAL PROPERTIES

The objectives of this thesis is to study the temperature distribution, potential distribution, electro-thermal heat flux of metallic lines whose material properties may varies position to position considering all mechanical and electrical properties varying with temperature. Thermal conductivity, resistivity, convection coefficient and current density are responsible for these variation of temperature, potential and electro-thermal heat flux distribution. In first case, thermal conductivity and resistivity is considered as a function of temperature and in other case conductivity and resistivity is considered as a function of location as well as temperature. This electro-thermal problem is composed of two problems – electrical and thermal which are solved as a coupled problem with corresponding governing equations and boundary conditions. Thesis also present a method to determine the electrical failure of thin metallic line due to local heat generation of solder joints.
